Electricity Supply

Suppliers are other companies, not affiliated with Maine Public Service in any way, that generate and sell power.  MPS delivers electricity and provides related services.  We make sure that the power generated gets to customers throughout northern Maine or is transmitted to another electrical system.  Transmission and distribution of electricity are responsibilities of MPS, regulated by the Maine Public Utilities Commission and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Various suppliers can generate electricity.  These suppliers are unregulated.  Right now, while the market is still developing, most homes and small businesses in our service territory are supplied by a Standard Offer Supplier.  The MPUC chooses the Standard Offer Supplier through a competitive bidding process.  The Standard Offer supply is conveniently billed in the same statement as the delivery bill.  The second page of the Maine Public Service residential electricity bill is for electricity supply.  MPS provides billing services and passes payment for the supply on to the Standard Offer provider.

You can count on Maine Public Service to deliver electricity to your home or business.  From Engineers to Line Workers in the field, we are working every day to make sure the transmission and distribution electrical network is safe, reliable, and cost efficient.
