Energy Extravaganza Workshop: Brainstorming

CLASSROOM
PROGRAMS-
Classroom Programs are presented by the Maine Public Service Company
educational services specialist at no cost to teachers and their
students in our service territory. These programs have been designed
to last approximately one hour, although each can be modified to
conform to other time requirements. Various pieces of literature for
students, and supplemental classroom materials for educators, are
available with each program.

Energy Extravaganza Workshop: Education Specialist listens

ELECTRICITY: What electricity is, how it is produced in
power plants, how it is delivered to Customers, and how it is put
to work is demonstrated. Educational kits are available for
hands-on activities.

DEMAND FOR ELECTRICITY: This program introduces students
to amperes, volts and watts; patterns of electric consumption; and
the ways electric utilities respond to varying demands for
electricity. It also teaches students how to measure electricity
and read an electric meter.

Knowing the facts about electric safety can be a matter of life or
death. Maine Public Service Company has put programs such as Hazard
Hamlet, Zap Rap and A to ZAP on the road to demonstrate the simple,
basic facts needed to live safely with electrical energy. It's great
fun -- and maybe a lifesaver!

A TO ZAP FOR ELEMENTARY LEVELS: Presentation stresses the
dangers of electricity and how to avoid hazardous electrical
situations. Lineperson's gear and safety equipment are
demonstrated.

HAZARD HAMLET: A presentation is given using a model of a
community filled with scenes of possible electrical accidents.

TINY TOTS ELECTRICITY AND SAFETY PROGRAMS: Activities
about electricity and its safe use are demonstrated to the very
young.

ZAP RAP FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS: This two-part
program discusses the generation and distribution of electricity
and potential hazards. The first part is a discussion and
demonstration of electricity. This is followed by a film entitled,
"Zap Rap", which reviews the safe use of electricity.

ENVIRONMENT,
ENERGY AND ECONOMICS-
|
The three Es programs introduce basic concepts on energy, environment,
and economics and the interaction among the three. These programs
assist the participant to understand some of the challenges and
problems related to energy use. Also offered are energy workshops that
enable each participant to gain knowledge and understanding of the
fundamental concepts of energy education through hands-on activities.

LIGHTING DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM: Using graphs and work
sheets, students can utilize their math skills to learn how much
electricity daily classroom lighting consumes.

METER READING: Demonstrations are given of how a meter
works, how to read the electricity meter, and how to save on your
electricity bill.

ENERGY AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS: A discussion of
energy sources available to us and its wise use is presented.

TEACHER/STUDENT ENERGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT WORKSHOPS: A
day-long workshop filled with energetic activities on energy,
electricity, and environmental concerns.

It is important that everyone gets an opportunity to explore the
changing field of energy, its efficient and safe use, energy careers
and issues affecting energy decision making. Maine Public Service
Company recognizes this need and is committed to working in
partnership with schools and communities to provide balanced,
meaningful educational services to school systems, educators,
students, senior citizen groups, service organizations, etc.

COMPANY TOURS: Students and teachers get a look at the
inner workings of the Company's Operations Center and Technical
Services upon request.

EARTH DAY CELEBRATION - POSTER AND ESSAY CONTEST: Through
this competition, students from kindergarten to the twelfth grade
show their drawing and writing talents.

ENERGY EAGLES PATROL: A team of students check
classrooms, office areas, and storage rooms in their schools at
available times and turn off the lights if they are not being
used.

FIRE DEPARTMENT/MPS COMPANY PARTNERSHIP: Presentations
and booklets on how to safely handle electrical fires are
available.

POWERful READERS PROGRAM: Volunteers from MPS Company
read to County students and donate the book to the classroom.

SENIOR CITIZEN PROGRAMS: Programs on any electricity,
energy management or environmental concerns are presented to
senior citizen groups.
